96er “Wheels of Confusion”
The 96er is a new concept in mountainbiking, all in the name of a smoother, more flowing ride. The 96er combines the best attributes of the 29er and the conventional 26 inch-wheeled MTB.

Anyone who has ridden a 29er MTB can attest to the fact that the front wheel rolls over obstacles better than a 26 inch wheel. Logs, rocks and ruts are all made easier with bigger wheels. The 96er with its front 29 inch wheel retains these benefits, but it also carries the benefit of a smaller – 26 inch – rear wheel, which means acceleration is made easier as you’re pedalling a smaller wheel. The concept is not new, off-road motorcycles have used larger front wheels for many years. The result is superior steering and cornering.
Weight. The 96er has a definite weight advantage over a 29er, but it will be slightly heavier than an equivalent 26” MTB, a 96er has a slightly heavier front end. Forks, either rigid or sprung will also be a little more weighty.
Traction. A larger diameter wheel has a bigger footprint or contact surface with the ground which means more traction in the front-end and potentially faster cornering ability.
Acceleration. Big wheels have a definite riding benefit but getting a big wheel moving is harder. The 96er eliminates this problem and the acceleration is more or less the same as a 26” bike, the only difference being the slightly heavier front end.
Strength. A larger wheel is marginally weaker, a 96er retains the strength of a conventional rear wheel.

About the frame

The material used for the frame is new-generation lightweight steel, Columbus Zona tubing. This tubing is strong and lightweight and results in a “lively” ride. The material absorbency potentially allows the rider longer riding time.
Tubing has been fillet brazed which adds a few grams but gives the frame a unique and smooth appearance.
Overall, the frame is a very traditional form, drawing on the proven shape of mountainbikes and bicycles in general. No bells and whistles.

About the frame-builder

The frame has been handcrafted by Ewen Gellie. Ewen has been riding and frame building since 1987. He has experience in all disciplines of mountainbiking, trials, cross-country and downhill. Riders,  including Ewen himself, have won Australian titles in all of these disciplines on his Yowie frames
